There are hotels where a night costs four figures, the lobby smells expensive, and the gift shop would now very much like to sell you a baseball cap.
Not a complicated hat. Not a hat with a concierge. A baseball cap.
Gleneagles currently lists logo caps from £35, plus £40 Sporting Club and slogan versions. Chateau Marmont has a $65 cotton cap embroidered with its Pan mascot. Le Bristol has included baseball caps in its Le Bristol Society line. Suvretta House made its version in British Racing Green corduroy; according to Business Traveller, its first run sold out in two weeks. J.K. Place has even made location-specific Snoopy versions.
So no, not literally every expensive hotel is selling one.
But enough of them are that the baseball cap has become an oddly perfect piece of luxury hotel merchandise.
Hotel merchandise used to mean the robe you considered stealing and then, hopefully, did not.
Now the better hotel shops increasingly look like small fashion boutiques. Vogue Business has flagged hotel merchandise as a broader hospitality trend, and recent travel-industry coverage has tracked properties selling everything from silk pyjamas and cashmere to carefully designed caps.
The cap makes peculiar sense.
It is wearable. It fits in a suitcase. It does not require anyone to explain why you bought a decorative hotel ashtray. And at £35 or $65, it can be dramatically cheaper than almost anything else associated with the property.
A room at the hotel may be a special-occasion decision. The hat is an impulse purchase.
That does not mean the cap proves you stayed there. Chateau Marmont sells its Pan cap online. Gleneagles does the same. The insider signal is therefore a little blurrier than the fantasy suggests.
Still, the object carries the place with it.

What makes the current version interesting is how little these hats look like traditional hotel souvenirs.
Suvretta House’s cap comes in British Racing Green corduroy. Gleneagles has built multiple cap lines around golf, sport and Scottish slogans. J.K. Place has made location-specific Snoopy caps.
The logo is still there. It is just trying much harder to look like something you would wear after checkout.
The appeal keeps circling the same ideas: memory, access, insider recognition and the ability to extend the feeling of a stay into ordinary life. A baseball cap happens to do all four without requiring a silk pyjama budget.
Which is probably why the humble hat keeps appearing in some very un-humble places.
You may not be taking the suite home.
But apparently the hotel would be delighted to let its baseball cap follow you.
